Physics Tutoring

Mathjitsu is opening 1-on-1 physics tutoring soon, for high school physics and AP Physics 1, 2 and C. Every session will be taught by a vetted physics tutor who works with Mathjitsu, in person in the Bay Area or online. Families who leave their details in the form below get matched first.

  • In person in the Bay Area (Solano, Napa and Contra Costa) or online, depending on the tutor
  • Your tutor confirms their rate when we match you
  • Terms depend on your tutor

What physics tutoring covers

From a first high school physics class to AP Physics C. The AP course outlines come from College Board.

High school physics

Regular or honors physics: motion, forces, energy, waves and electricity, and the algebra that ties them together.

AP Physics 1

Algebra-based, at the level of an intro college course. Motion, forces, energy, momentum, rotation, oscillations and fluids.

AP Physics 2

Also algebra-based. Heat, electric fields and circuits, magnetism, light and optics, waves and sound, and modern physics.

AP Physics C: Mechanics

Calculus-based and college-level. Motion, forces, energy, momentum, rotation and oscillations, worked out with derivatives and integrals.

AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism

Calculus-based too. Electric fields and Gauss's law, electric potential, capacitors, circuits, magnetic fields and induction.

College Board calls both AP Physics C courses a good fit for students who plan to study a physical science or engineering in college.

The AP Physics exams, May 2027

All four AP Physics exams are in the first week of AP exams:

  • AP Physics C: Mechanics: Monday, May 3, 2027, morning
  • AP Physics 1: Wednesday, May 5, 2027, afternoon
  • AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism: Wednesday, May 5, 2027, afternoon
  • AP Physics 2: Thursday, May 6, 2027, morning

The four exams share one format, with two halves that count the same:

Multiple choice

42 questions in 85 minutes, half the score.

Written questions

4 questions in 95 minutes, the other half. One of each kind: solving a problem with equations, moving between graphs, diagrams and equations, designing and analyzing an experiment, and explaining a result in words and in math.

That's 3 hours of testing in all. The exams are hybrid: your kid answers the multiple choice in the Bluebook app, reads the written questions there too, and writes those answers by hand in a paper booklet. A calculator is allowed on both halves: a handheld one (4-function, scientific or graphing) or the Desmos calculator built into Bluebook.

What changed for 2027: 42 multiple-choice questions instead of 40, 85 minutes instead of 80, and 95 minutes for the written questions instead of 100.

How matching works

Every physics session is taught by a tutor who works with Mathjitsu. My part is vetting those tutors and matching your family with the right one. Physics tutoring opens when the first physics tutor passes that vetting call.

  1. You leave your details.

Use the form below. Put your kid's course in the message: high school physics, or AP Physics 1, 2 or C.

  2. I vet every physics tutor with a call first.

I talk with each tutor before I send them any family.

  3. I match you with a tutor.

Families who wrote in first get matched first, by course and by in person or online.

  4. Your tutor confirms their rate and bills you directly.

Each tutor sets their own rate, schedule and terms. You pay the tutor, not Mathjitsu.

Questions parents ask

How hard is AP Physics?

It's hard in a different way from a math class. Knowing the formulas isn't enough. Half of each exam is 4 written questions, and they ask your kid to design an experiment, move between a graph, a diagram and an equation, and explain a result in words. AP Physics 1 and 2 use algebra; AP Physics C uses calculus.

What kind of math is used in physics?

AP Physics 1 and 2 are algebra-based: equations, graphs, and some trigonometry for angles. AP Physics C is calculus-based: derivatives and integrals, used from the first unit. If the math is what slows your kid down, Mathjitsu tutors precalculus and AP Calculus too.

How much does physics tutoring cost?

Each physics tutor who works with Mathjitsu sets their own rate and terms, so there's no price on this page yet. Your tutor confirms their rate when we match you, and you decide from there.

Can I trust the physics tutor you match us with?

I talk with every physics tutor on a call before I send them a single family. Families trust my word, so a tutor who doesn't pass that call doesn't get matched. Each tutor works with Mathjitsu independently, on their own terms.
