What moves the price

Level

The range is wide at every level: Wyzant's guide lists algebra at $30 to $150 an hour and calculus at $35 to $100. What costs the most in these sources is test prep, not a level of math. My own rates have two levels.

In person or online

Two of the East Bay listings above charge $10 and $50 more an hour in person than online. I charge more in person too, because I drive to you.

Test prep

SAT prep costs the most in these sources: The Princeton Review's SAT tutoring works out to $175 to $200 an hour, against $80 an hour and up for its academic tutoring. I charge SAT and ACT math at my precalculus-and-up rate.

Experience

Rates spread widely: Wyzant's guide lists algebra from $30 to $150 an hour. Whatever the rate, ask how the tutor would work with your kid's course, and read their reviews. I've tutored math for 10+ years, and my reviews are on Google.

Location

East Bay tutors on Berkeley Parents Network list $50 to $150 an hour, a range that starts near the top of Wyzant's $35 to $60 average. I tutor in person in Solano, Napa and Contra Costa counties.

Packages or month to month

The Princeton Review sells SAT tutoring in packages, and the bigger one costs less per hour: $175 an hour for 18 hours against $200 an hour for 10. Sylvan says most of its centers offer monthly memberships with no long-term contract. I bill month to month, with no contract.

Questions parents ask

Is $50 an hour too much for tutoring?

Not by these figures. $50 is inside Wyzant's average of $35 to $60 an hour, and at the bottom of the $50 to $150 that East Bay tutors list. The Princeton Review's SAT tutoring packages work out to $175 to $200 an hour. What matters more is whether each hour goes to what your kid actually needs.

What is a good price per hour for tutoring?

There's no single answer. The average on Wyzant, an online tutoring marketplace, is $35 to $60 an hour. Preply lists $30 an hour for math tutors from the US, and East Bay tutors list $50 to $150. The Princeton Review's SAT tutoring packages work out to $175 to $200 an hour. A good price is one you can keep up for as long as your kid needs the help.

Which is better, Kumon or tutor?

They do different jobs. Kumon is practice: daily worksheets of about 30 minutes per subject, at your kid's own pace, with center staff supervising twice a week. I teach 1-on-1, on your kid's own course: this week's homework, the next test, the topic that stopped making sense. If your kid needs daily practice, Kumon is built for that. If they're stuck in a class right now, that's what I do.

Is $30 an hour for tutoring good?

It can be. $30 an hour is what Preply lists for math tutors from the US, and it's below Wyzant's $35 to $60 average. At any price, check the tutor's reviews and ask how they'd handle your kid's course.

Michael has been an amazing educational influence on our son, not only have we seen improved math grades, but the patient and personalized teaching methods have improved his self esteem and given our son confidence in learning. We wish we would’ve found Mathjitsu sooner!

My daughter asked her teacher if she could use the technique she learned from her tutor because it’s easier for her to understand. Thankfully, the teacher had no problem with it. What I really love is how he’s able to make math make sense. She went from tears to confidence, and it clearly shows in her grades.

Michael is truly a MathJitsu master. And he’s extremely accommodating with scheduling, always 100% punctual, and flexible with meeting locations, either at home or, in my case, a local Starbucks. If you’re in the American Canyon area and need a math tutor, you would be doing yourself a disservice not to give him a call.

Michael saved my grade in Calc. I was totally lost on integration techniques and series, but he breaks things down step-by-step without rushing. He doesn't just give you the answer—he actually teaches you how to think through the problems yourself. After three sessions, things finally clicked. Highly recommend!
