What AP Statistics covers

College Board revised the course for 2026-27 to match today's intro college statistics courses. It has five units, and they come down to four ideas:

Data

Graphs and summaries of one variable, and how a survey or experiment collects data without bias.

Probability

Chance, random variables and their distributions: the math behind every conclusion that comes later.

Inference

Using a sample to say something about everyone: confidence intervals and hypothesis tests, for proportions and for means.

Regression

A line that models how two variables move together, and how well it fits.

The May 2027 exam

The exam is on Tuesday, May 11, 2027. It's fully digital, in the Bluebook app, and has two halves that count the same:

Multiple choice

42 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, half the score. Each question has 4 answer choices.

Written questions

4 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, the other half. Each is worth 10 points, and one is always inference: a hypothesis test or a confidence interval.

What changed for 2027: 42 multiple-choice questions instead of 40, 4 answer choices instead of 5, and 4 written questions instead of 6. A graphing calculator is still allowed, and Desmos is built into Bluebook.

How I tutor AP Statistics

Half the exam is written, so knowing the method isn't enough: your kid has to say what it shows, in context. I start from where your kid is losing points. Then we practice reading each question for what it actually asks, choosing the method, and writing the justification step by step: the conditions, the work, and a conclusion about the data in plain words.

Taking AP Calculus too? I tutor AP Calculus AB at the same rate.

Families abroad

Online sessions are taught in English. For families in Asia and the Middle East, that means early morning or evening, Pacific time:

  • Korea: about 5–7am on weekdays, or Friday 5–9pm Pacific (Saturday 9am–1pm in Seoul)
  • Singapore and Hong Kong: around 6am Pacific (9pm there, same day), or around 4pm Pacific (7am the next day there)
  • Dubai: about 5–10am

Daylight saving moves these by an hour, so we pick the exact time together.

Michael has been an amazing educational influence on our son, not only have we seen improved math grades, but the patient and personalized teaching methods have improved his self esteem and given our son confidence in learning. We wish we would’ve found Mathjitsu sooner!

My daughter asked her teacher if she could use the technique she learned from her tutor because it’s easier for her to understand. Thankfully, the teacher had no problem with it. What I really love is how he’s able to make math make sense. She went from tears to confidence, and it clearly shows in her grades.

Michael is truly a MathJitsu master. And he’s extremely accommodating with scheduling, always 100% punctual, and flexible with meeting locations, either at home or, in my case, a local Starbucks. If you’re in the American Canyon area and need a math tutor, you would be doing yourself a disservice not to give him a call.

Michael saved my grade in Calc. I was totally lost on integration techniques and series, but he breaks things down step-by-step without rushing. He doesn't just give you the answer—he actually teaches you how to think through the problems yourself. After three sessions, things finally clicked. Highly recommend!

Questions parents ask

Is AP Statistics a hard AP?

It's hard in a different way from calculus. The algebra is lighter: College Board dropped the Algebra 2 prerequisite for 2026-27. The hard part is choosing the right method for a situation and explaining the result in words, in context. Half the exam is written questions, so that explaining counts as much as the math.

How much does AP Statistics tutoring cost?

It's $75/hr online, from anywhere, and $85/hr in person in Solano, Napa and Contra Costa counties. Same rate as precalculus, calculus and SAT math, month to month, with no contract.

What is the 10% rule for AP Stats?

When a sample is drawn without replacement, it should be no more than 10% of the population. Then the picks are close enough to independent for the usual standard deviation formulas to hold. Before a confidence interval or a hypothesis test, your kid checks it and writes it down, along with the other conditions.

Is 70% a 5 on AP Stats?

No one can say yet. College Board doesn't publish the cutoffs, and they can move from year to year. The May 2027 exam is also new: 42 multiple-choice questions instead of 40, and 4 written questions worth 10 points each instead of 6. Older score charts don't fit it exactly.
