SAT Math Tutoring
I'm Michael Seutin, a math tutor with 10+ years of experience. I've tutored SAT math on the old paper SAT and on the digital SAT, one student at a time.
- $60/hr in person in the Bay Area: Solano, Napa and Contra Costa
- $50/hr online, anywhere in the US or abroad, taught in English
- Month to month, no contract
The digital SAT
Since spring 2024, the SAT has been digital. Here's the math section as students take it now:
In the Bluebook app
Students take the whole test in the Bluebook app, not on paper.
Two adaptive modules
35 minutes and 22 questions each: 44 questions, 4 of them unscored. How the first module goes decides how hard the second one is.
Desmos built in
The Desmos graphing calculator is built into the app, or a student can bring an approved calculator.
Scored 200–800
The math section is scored from 200 to 800.
How I tutor SAT math
Most SAT math points are lost on algebra a student already learned but can't yet do quickly and cleanly under time. I find the question types costing the most points, we fix those first, then we practice in timed 35-minute modules with Desmos, so test day feels familiar.
ACT math too
I tutor ACT math too. It moves faster than the SAT, covers a wider spread of topics, and allows a calculator the whole way through. I tutor it the same way: find what's costing points, fix that first, then practice at the real pace.
Where does your kid stand?
Enter how many math questions your kid got right, and my calculator estimates the score out of 800 and its percentile.
Families abroad
Online sessions are taught in English. For families in Asia and the Middle East, that means early morning or evening, Pacific time:
- Korea: about 5–7am on weekdays, or Friday 5–9pm Pacific (Saturday 9am–1pm in Seoul)
- Singapore and Hong Kong: around 6am Pacific (9pm there, same day), or around 4pm Pacific (7am the next day there)
- Dubai: about 5–10am
Daylight saving moves these by an hour, so we pick the exact time together.

Michael has been an amazing educational influence on our son, not only have we seen improved math grades, but the patient and personalized teaching methods have improved his self esteem and given our son confidence in learning. We wish we would’ve found Mathjitsu sooner!
My daughter asked her teacher if she could use the technique she learned from her tutor because it’s easier for her to understand. Thankfully, the teacher had no problem with it. What I really love is how he’s able to make math make sense. She went from tears to confidence, and it clearly shows in her grades.
Michael is truly a MathJitsu master. And he’s extremely accommodating with scheduling, always 100% punctual, and flexible with meeting locations, either at home or, in my case, a local Starbucks. If you’re in the American Canyon area and need a math tutor, you would be doing yourself a disservice not to give him a call.
Michael saved my grade in Calc. I was totally lost on integration techniques and series, but he breaks things down step-by-step without rushing. He doesn't just give you the answer—he actually teaches you how to think through the problems yourself. After three sessions, things finally clicked. Highly recommend!
Very detailed in his explanations. He’s very patient and understanding and will stick with you until it clicks with you. 10/10 recommend!
He helped me with my geometry homework. I did it online but it was very efficient and he explained everything in detail. Would recommend👍
Detailed explanations. Was a great help.
Questions parents ask
How much do SAT math tutors charge?
It's $50/hr online, from anywhere, and $60/hr in person in Solano, Napa and Contra Costa counties. Same rate as every student, month to month, with no contract.
Is getting a SAT tutor worth it?
It depends on the student. When a few topics are costing most of the points, a tutor makes practice time count: we work on exactly those instead of everything. If a student won't practice between sessions, a tutor helps less. It's month to month, so you can see whether it's working before going further.
Is a 570 on math SAT good?
A 570 is about the 68th percentile of SAT takers. That's above the middle, which is around 500, and below the top quarter, which starts around 600. Whether it's good enough depends on the colleges your kid is aiming for.
How rare is an 800 on SAT math?
An 800 is the top of the scale, at the 99th percentile of SAT takers. An 800 almost always comes from the harder second module, so a strong first module matters.
